Day 209 – A new toy

There was a photographer (Bruce Press) at TAM using this interesting bounce device and I was so fascinated, I had to ask him about it. Bruce told me how it throws 80% of the flash straight up and only directs 20% onto the subject. Very nice for indoor event photography.  I just had to get myself one and it arrived today.

And of course, I had to test it out. But not too much. After all, the Opening Ceremonies are on, and I love, love, love the Summer Olympics.

No harsh shadows, pretty nice. I can’t wait to work with this some more.  Like, maybe shooting some people for a change!  But tonight, it’s the critters again.   Not bad for on-camera flash.

Gotta go. They’re about to light the torch.

  1. I have those . . . a set of four for different applications (various holes in different configurations. Used them with my old SB-24 flash. I think I bought those in the 90’s sometime.

Looks like that one has a collar that goes around the flash head. The ones I have have a velcro edge, and you attach velcro onto the flash to quickly attach them and swap them. One of the reason I have not done it yet; don’t know that I want to add the velcro to the flash.

Besides, I’ve played with various flash settings, and gotten somewhat similar results. Of course, I’ve not played anywhere near enough to be proficient with either the flash or proper use of those bounce attachments.

. . . yet another thing for “sometime later”.

    • You can get a strap that does not require sticking velcro on your flash. I got that as well because I didn’t want to add the velcro stickies. And yes, I got the inserts that go with it (silver, gold, white and a diffuser panel for the front).

    • Just to be clear, I also play with my flash settings, varying the intensity, the angle of the flash head, changing the sync, using diffusers, etc. This is just one more tool in my bag. I think I’m going to like this one better than the one I bought a few months ago. It is more versatile and attaches with greater ease and holds its shape better.
