Day 187 – Skateboarders

I drive by this skateboard park many times a week as it is one of the ways I can go to work (or home).  For weeks I’ve been wanting to stop and shoot, but for one reason or another had not done so. Finally, today I stopped. I shot for about twenty minutes.  It was challenging, and I plan on going back again.  They were all having a blast, even though they seldom “stuck the landing.”  Practice, practice, practice! It’s the only way to get any good at anything.

All photos can be found at SmugMug too.

This guy was pretty good.

This guy got something in his eye . . .

There was  a good mix of ages. Mostly boys, but a few girls as well. None of the girls were skating when I was shooting.

Newbie . . .

I love the shadow in this one.

Another of the younger ones.

I had to wait a while before some of them started skating on this steep incline,  but finally a group of them started working it.

When I left I thanked one of them for allowing me to practice.  I will return.

  1. I would love to shoot these types of action shots. There is a skate park in Monument, but I’m very reluctant to go and photograph kids unless during an event (older white male with a camera hanging around young kids – not sure how people would react).

Good actions shots. Looks to me (based on the direction of the board) #12 i about to take a spill.

    • Here’s what I think you could do to be able to shoot these guys (or others): Get some business cards made up with your name, your blog, your SmugMug gallery (or make your own). Hand them out when you go to a place like this to shoot. They’ll see you are legit and you get to shoot. I was thinking of handing out cards the next time I go, just so these guys can see what I’m doing. I didn’t this time because I wasn’t sure how they were going to come out, but I figure if they are going to help contribute to my growth as a photographer, then they should at least see the finished product. I carry photo releases and cards in my backpack, and I need to make more use of them.

  2. Wonderful shots. I did something similar very early in this project. I was nervous about taking photos of kids (like Disperser said). Some parents were there so I gave them a card that had my website and blog site on it so they could go in and look at the photos. I also got their permission before taking photos. Some of the older kids were so excited about having their photograph taken. The kept doing tricks. Unfortunately, at that point I had a lot of blurry photos. I think I’ll have to go and try again.
