I like that it allows for larger images, but I have to say, since you asked, that the background is really distracting from the photograph. That’s a fun expression, by the way, that you have in that selfie. 🙂
Definitely. I think it’s good because it doesn’t draw my eye at all. My eye goes straight to the photograph. One thing I do notice, however, is that the featured image is off center. I might need to go back out and come back in and see how that feels. Right now, I’m very aware of it. What do you think about that?
Also, what I like about this neutral color with the white is that it creates a nice clean, bright page–a break from so many dark pages that I see (mine included). The off-center thing, now that I’m looking again, is not a distraction.
Oh, now it’s black with red! I like that, too. Isn’t it fun to play around? Personally, I liked the muted color you had before. It was easier on my eyes.
OK, here is what little I know about backgrounds. For this I will reference “they”.
They say: when editing photos in Photoshop, or other editing programs, one should choose neutral gray as the first choice, as it will not influence your perception of colors.
They also say one should edit photographs using the same background color scheme as where the photo will be displayed.
Personally, I am partial to black backgrounds, hence my theme has a black background, my Lightroom is set to black, and my SmugMug theme is set to black.
There is a chance this kind of background might affect a person’s perception of the photo . . . for example, after adding the background, the above photo looks “sparkly”. I kid, of course, but it’s something to think about. Maybe. If you want to.
Now it gets into personal preferences. Meaning, this background is a background . . . it provides a framework, but is not the subject. You could probably do this with a number of muted shades. Were you not asking me about it, I would not notice it . . . overly.
In addition, the photo is black and white . . . one might get a different impression from a color photo, or a very vivid photo. You likely should choose posts at random and see how your choices work with different photos. Just a suggestion.
About the change, I love it! I really like this theme and I think the muted colours work fine. The one distracting thing to me (and I am probably being over critical) is the squares in the main body. Yes, they are slight, and most people won’t even notice them (or they won’t cause an issue for them) but believe it or not, they do distract me. It’s a slight issue, over all I think you have a winner!
Well, that is because of the design of the template that has the date and comment info to the left. Nothing I can do about that. It doesn’t bother me because I realize it is by design.
Seems kind of sparse, but my tastes are my own. I also tend to be resistant to change (I’m still using Twenty-Ten, and don’t see myself changing).
That said, it seems to allow for larger pictures . . . never a bad thing.

Yeah, that’s why I like it. All the widgets are below. I still need to play with the background.

Okay, I added a background. I paid money for the right to do this, so I may be playing a lot until I settle on one.

Yeah, I’m not sure of the background. Like I said, I’m playing! 🙂

I went back to the muted color. I like that one better. For now.

I think it’s great that you mix it up every once in a while!

I like disperser’s suggestion that you try different images, color and monochrome, with these backgrounds.

I was going to go for gray, and may still. I went to a solid muted color. Thoughts?
