Day 245 – 56

Just messing around in my make-shift light studio today.  My friend gave me some seamless paper, so I tacked it to the wall and set up my lights.  I needed the practice because it looks like I’ve got another portrait gig coming up and I wanted to be sure I was comfortable with my lights and backdrop.  Besides, I just need to keep practicing and trying new things.

You can find more from my shoot at my new gallery, 56.

  1. Nice shots. Some a little risque, but I guess the kiddies are not like to chance upon them.

By the way, I presume you got the SmugMug e-mail about the price increase? What do you think?

    • The letter is a bit confusing as I am not scheduled to renew until May of next year. I’m going to contact them for clarification on that. It would really suck to be whacked with a renewal charge next month!

      • Unless you are at the “Pro” level, not much will change.

There are 1,000+ comments on the blog post . . . the majority are negative.

I don’t sell much (zero sales this year), so I will likely drop down to the “Power” level, but when I do, I will switch off the option to buy prints and products. Mainly because if someone does buy anything, I don’t get a cut (unless I’m in the $300/year plan) and they do.

It’s a bit annoying, but I’ll save $90 from the current cost, and get to keep all the links from the blog. Realistically I don’t need a pro account, but if I ever did want to try and make money from photography, that is now a steep entry price, and will likely look at Zenfolio (or competitors).

Sadly, having kept an eye on competitors, I still say SmugMug has the best display of my pictures (I occasionally try other sites). They just look better, and right now that drives my decisions.

The worry is that such a drastic move signifies either they are in trouble, or they are positioning themselves to be bought out. Either way, I plan on having a backup ready and running by the end of the year.

  2. Wow, Carissa, these are great! Love the movement, color, and blur of the first shot. The light, tones, composition, and clarity of the second shot are all very nice. The warmth of the lighting and your expression in the third are great. How nice to such a successful shot of you and Maya together!

    • Thank you, Melanie. We call Maya our “stealth kitty” because she is the quietest and least obtrusive of all our critters, but she has a sweetness about her that I just adore. Thanks for your great feedback on all the shots.
