Denise

Denise was the Clinton campaign organizer for my area in the run-up to the Nevada Democratic Caucus. After the caucus, Denise did not head out to another state as many of the other organizers did, but stayed in Nevada and is about to file to run for Sparks City Council. We did her headshot session on Saturday.

Community

A co-worker of mine had a reception for her art class project show last night.

Her show was held at The Generator. From their website (link):

We’re an inclusive art space in greater Reno, Nevada, Sparks to be exact, for anyone who wants to make art and be part of a creative community.

The Generator is an oasis of decommodification. We don’t buy. We don’t sell. We dream. We convene. We create. We make. We’re inspired by the magic and inspiration we see in all its enormity at Burning Man each summer, and we want to keep it alive all year. We combine forces and share resources in the name of creative growth and community involvement for all.

We have industrial equipment and tools, a powerful network of creative minds, 3 phase power, and 34,000 square feet of workspace. We share our collective know-how and we hope to learn from yours. We’re here to encourage professional artists and beginners alike to make art and to learn from each other as a creative community.

We operate under the same creative community ethic outlined in Burning Man’s Ten Principles.

We were given a tour of the first floor.  It’s really an amazing place, and I hope to go participate somehow in this community.

Smoke? What smoke?

It looks like we’ve gotten to the point that smoke or no smoke, we’ve just got to get on with our lives. That certainly seemed to be the case at this year’s Best of the West Rib Cook-off in Sparks.  After running some errands yesterday, Sweetie and I made our way over to Victorian Square to take in the sights.

Packed. The place was wall-to-wall people. And as you can see, the blue sky was obliterated by smoke and visibility only went so far. There are usually hills visible beyond the trees.

Still, the cloudy skies made for a huge soft box.

Smoke upon smoke. And no one seemed to care.

Lots of dads carrying kids.

Lots of eating.

Corn on the cob seems to be a universal favorite.

Everyone seems to have their own rib-eating style.

There are the nibblers.

There are the “strip the meat from the bones” types.

Fingers must be licked and teeth picked. Fingernails will do.

There were carnival rides.

And dancing in the streets.

Criss Angel’s little sister?

A couple of the musicians.

People hanging out and enjoying the music.

More dancing!

Dance routine!

And the big finish!

Coming and Going

We went to the movies yesterday for Father’s Day (Star Trek: Into Darkness, at Sweetie’s request. Yes, it was a fun movie.)  Outside the theater is the interactive fountain, and though there weren’t very many kids there at the time, I caught this little boy having some fun.

Sweetie surprised me by heading into the fountain himself, and somehow he managed to hang out the center without getting too wet.

Day 321 – Outside the Sparks Theater

We met some friends tonight for dinner and a movie. Sweetie and I beat our friends to the theater which gave me an opportunity to snap some shots with my iPhone and the Hipstamatic app. This was my favorite and was taken looking out from the theater toward John Ascuaga’s Nugget on Victorian Avenue.

By the way, the movie we saw was “Lincoln,” which is a fantastic film. Steven Spielberg has done it again. The story and acting are superb, and the cinematography was incredible. The film had cool tone and felt to my eyes like a textured vintage photograph. I highly recommend the film. If you can, go see it. Do not wait for the DVD.

Day 189 – Playing in the fountain

I realize that I am a day behind. Late night Friday, full day yesterday. You all understand, I’m sure. Anyway, here is “yesterday’s” post.

Sparks, Nevada has a fun little downtown area called Victorian Square. Many street fairs are held there, including the Best in the West Rib Cook-Off and a weekly Farmer’s Market in the summer.  One of the best parts of Victorian Square is an interactive fountain in front of the movie theater. Yesterday I stopped by to snap some of the kids trying to stay cool on a hot Nevada summer day.

It was hotter than the dickens and I could only bear about fifteen minutes in the sun, given that I didn’t have a hat or the freedom to jump in the fountain with the rest of them.  Still, I got a lot of shots in (and handed my card out to the moms there), so if you’d like to see them all, just head on over to my SmugMug gallery.

The kids were having a blast and it was hard to narrow it down, but here are just a few of my favorite shots.  (Moms – if you want a copy of any of my photos, please contact me via my Facebook page or contact me via email at carissanv at gmail dot com).

More of this cute guy at  SmugMug.

   Isn’t she adorable?

Even the pups were cooling off.

This is probably my favorite shot. I caught him at just the right moment.

Seriously, check out the gallery at SmugMug.
