Day 43 – Fort Churchill

Sweetie and I took the dogs to Fort Churchill today. We’ve lived here for over ten years, and though we’ve talked about going to see it, we never have. Until today.  Fort Churchill is a Civil War era fort built in the middle of the Nevada desert about 35 east of Carson City.  It was a harsh post for the soldiers and many deserted.

I took lots of pictures and the ones that I liked best I have posted to my Flickr account here.  This one I loved the most. I love the framing of the far window and the framing of the tree in the distance. I love the texture and the color.

  1. Nice photo and composition.

If I could, and do so without you thinking it’s criticism, I would suggest adding a light vignette (darkening of the edges and corners) to minimize the impact of the front wall and accent the middle of the picture.

I tend to flip-flop on using vignetting, but it can help focus both the colors and the composition. Again, not criticizing. Just suggesting.

It may be it does not go with this photo, or you end up not liking how it looks, but then again, it would add one more layer of framing to the composition.

    • Thanks for the suggestion. I rarely, if ever, vignette, but I’ll play with it and see if I like it. I don’t want to go down the road I’ve seen at other photoblogs where absolutely everything is vignetted. I can see where it can be a useful tool, bu in other cases it can be a lazy way out of fixing a blown out sky, etc.

      • Oh crap . . . I just vignetted all the shots I took today. Especially those I converted to B&W; those I vignetted the crap out of.

Was not trying to hide mistakes or anything . . . it just seemed to work with the subject (frost on all sorts of stuff).

You can tell me tomorrow if it was objectionable.
