Day 181 – Hiding in the petals

I was able to work from home today and that meant that I didn’t have to leave the house early in the morning.  Taking advantage of the extra time before my “work day” started, I headed out to photograph the backyard in the early morning light. Today was watering day and the flowers still held droplets of water from the sprinklers.

And then there is the purple sage . . .

The flowers are indeed lovely, but they also attract some six-legged creatures.  I’ve given up trying to avoid them, and now seek them out.

After fighting with VPN and reports all day I slipped out into the backyard once again, and guess what I found hiding in the roses? Anyone know what this little guy is? And he was teeny. A grasshopper? Cricket? Locust?

Day 176 – I’d rather post these

I’ve been up to my eyeballs working on the photo gallery for the baby shower I went to yesterday. The gallery is here, if you’d like to take a peek. The father-to-be is our nephew, so this was a family affair and then some.

Therefore, I haven’t had a chance to go out with the camera, and rather than post something less than, I’m going to post some more photos I took yesterday. Hope you don’t mind.

Jezebel.  I was playing with aperture priority and set my camera to f/5.6 at 100 ISO. The camera set the shutter speed to 1/15s. I also had the flash on, so Jezzie came out blurry except for her eyes.  I kind of like it!

Nina – giving me her “look.”

Day 115 – Roses!

I had to run to Whole Foods to grab some lunch for my boss’ boss (very nice woman).  Outside the store were racks of gorgeous flowers. I want to plant some!

Day 92 – Tender shoots

Wow. Three full months down! I can hardly believe it.  Day One of Month Four on deck.

The backyard is starting to spring to life . . .

My peony, a gift for my wedding shower in 2002, has never failed to provide spectacular blooms. I’m always happy to see these quick-growing shoots make their appearance.

My favorite flowers, though, are roses. We’ve got about five bushes in our backyard. I can’t wait for their sweet-smelling blooms!

The lilac bushes are all springing to life as well.

Day 50 – Faded Roses and Budding Pines

I wandered into the yard today with plans to practice with my light meter.  I metered and photographed the dogs, the trees, the sleeping vegetable garden and just worked my way around the backyard.  It worked swimmingly and with few exceptions, my shots were properly exposed for my intended shots.

Our rose bushes have not been pruned so there are quite a few dead blooms on them. After shooting some of them, I headed out front to check out the Austrian Pines. We planted five of them when we built the house eleven years ago, and at the time they were just about three feet tall.  Now they are huge and I noticed today that only one of them has pine cones on it. Odd.  All the pines are “budding” though.

Day 45 – Trader Joe’s Flowers

Our receptionist  always seems to have a vase full of flowers at her desk.  This afternoon I was about to step outside to wander the grounds and shoot, but I couldn’t resist these colorful beauties. She told me she’d picked them up at Trader Joe’s and had told her husband to save himself $80. Gotta love it!
