Day 195 – The Amaz!ng Randi

I took this photo of James Randi, the founder of the James Randi Educational Foundation (JREF) today as he was being interviewed by Jamy Ian Swiss about his mission to reveal Uri Geller for the fraud he was (and is). James Randi is an amazing force for skepticism and critical thought, and the hero of every attendee at The Amaz!ng Meeting.

Here he is from the front.

Day 194 – Arches and Shadow

I snapped this one early this morning, before the busy of the day took over. It’s nearly 11 as I post this and we are catching our breath before heading out for one last event that will keep us out until about 2 in the morning. Luckily, we we able to get an hour-long nap in late this afternoon.

Day 193 – Hotter than Hades

Thank goodness we can stay inside. This may look idyllic but only if you were in the water. Blast furnace were the two words that came to my mind.

That being said, I did go for a swim. It was very nice.

Getting here a day before the conference workshops started was a great idea. After today it’s likely we will be too busy to take much advantage of the pool. I have a feeling this is what we’ll be seeing a lot of:

Day 192.5 – We have to leave them for a while

Tomorrow morning we’ll be heading out the door for five days. They’ll be in good hands, but we’ll miss them.  I got my to-dos done earlier than I thought so I pulled out my Speedlite and my reflector umbrella and set them up on the light stand. The cats were nowhere to be found, but the pups were available.

The heat of the day (100+ degrees today) had taken its toll on  Buddy, and our big boy wasn’t interested in doing anything but lay out on the carpet.

Nina gave me a little more as she worked hard on the Nylabone, which as you can see, is about as big as she is!

You all know I’m not big on the “reblogging” thing, but I wanted to share my lighting instructor’s latest blog post. I’ll get to study under him again next month as I take his two-Saturday class at the Nevada Museum of Art. I’m so excited!

The master at work.

Day 189 – Playing in the fountain

I realize that I am a day behind. Late night Friday, full day yesterday. You all understand, I’m sure. Anyway, here is “yesterday’s” post.

Sparks, Nevada has a fun little downtown area called Victorian Square. Many street fairs are held there, including the Best in the West Rib Cook-Off and a weekly Farmer’s Market in the summer.  One of the best parts of Victorian Square is an interactive fountain in front of the movie theater. Yesterday I stopped by to snap some of the kids trying to stay cool on a hot Nevada summer day.

It was hotter than the dickens and I could only bear about fifteen minutes in the sun, given that I didn’t have a hat or the freedom to jump in the fountain with the rest of them.  Still, I got a lot of shots in (and handed my card out to the moms there), so if you’d like to see them all, just head on over to my SmugMug gallery.

The kids were having a blast and it was hard to narrow it down, but here are just a few of my favorite shots.  (Moms – if you want a copy of any of my photos, please contact me via my Facebook page or contact me via email at carissanv at gmail dot com).

More of this cute guy at  SmugMug.

   Isn’t she adorable?

Even the pups were cooling off.

This is probably my favorite shot. I caught him at just the right moment.

Seriously, check out the gallery at SmugMug.

Day 188 – Reno is Artown

In Reno, July means Artown, a month-long celebration of the arts. On Friday nights there are concerts by the river. Last night we had to go downtown to meet some friends at a local watering hole but before that Sweetie and I headed over to the amphitheater to listen to the music and do a little people watching.  I shot a bunch more photos and will likely post them later, but I’ve got to get these up as I should have been out the door thirty minutes ago.
