Tour de Nez: Fast!

Photos from the first men’s race.  I have to note that while they called this the “men’s” race, I saw a number of women competing as well.  There were several “men’s” races, not any “women’s” races, so I think they just bunched them all together and awarded trophies accordingly?  I dunno.

Needless to say, it was a great opportunity to practice panning!

How is it possible that they can chat while going so fast?

Cheering the riders on!

I’m slowly filling the gallery, so if you’d like to see more and/or follow my progress, here is the link.

Tour de Nez: Handcycles

I’ll be posting a lot of my shots from Sunday’s Tour de Nez over the next few days.

The handcycle race was the first race of the day (after the 5k run) and it was great fun, and inspiring.  These guys can fly!

These are just a few. When the gallery is complete, I’ll provide the link.

More photos tomorrow!

At the Arboretum

I spent part of Friday at Rancho San Rafael Park with a group of co-workers doing clean-up of the Wilbur D. May Arboretum (link).  Of course, I put my rake down for a bit to get in a few shots.

We worked this sunny patch as our first order of business. Temps were expected to get to over 100 later in the day, so we figured it was best to get this taken care of early.

Even at that early hour, it was freakin’ hot.  And dusty.

After getting this area cleared, we moved into shade by the labyrinth where I took a few minutes to capture some of the lovelies.

Friday Night and f/1.8 (mostly)

At the dinner the other night I slapped on my 85mm and opened the aperture setting as far as it could go. The hangar is lit by ambient sunlight from the hangar doors and high hanging tungsten lights within, and while I was looking to compensate for that, I mostly wanted to blur as much of the very busy background as possible.

There is a lot of story swapping that goes on at an event like this.

Other times, you’re just taking it all in.

I gave these two black and whites a little different treatment.  I also switched my ISO and stopped down my aperture a bit, as it was getting later and I was losing the light coming in from the hangar door.

Dessert was ice cream from two strategically placed carts. It looks like this guy got a bit more than he should have!

To show you what I was trying to avoid with my wide aperture, here are two I shot at f/8.

How I Spent My Sunday, Part 2

A few more photos from Sunday’s Medical Response Outreach Event (MORE).

Danielle and Cory shared their stories with us. Danielle was compelling and her story would break your heart.

They both were willing to let me photograph their teeth so that we could convey to our elected officials the dire need for services in our community.  For obvious reasons, I will not be posting those photographs here.

Jacqui is a home health care nurse. Neither she nor her husband are insured.

Davit has big dreams of making it one day.

Bette (pronounced Betty, she was quick to tell me!) brought her son in for a flu shot and gave me good-natured hell about taking her photo, yet when I asked if I could photograph her with her boys, she proudly sat between them. I’ve got a print all ready to send to her.
