Most people like photographing them at the seashore.
Me? I find them in the parking lot of the local home improvement store sparring with some crows over a plastic bag filled with who-knows-what.

Very nice treatment, both in the choice of B&W and the composition. Of the two, I prefer the second. While I’m still not comfortable with that whole selective DOF thing, it’s more because the shot seems more personal; more interaction between the bird and photographer since it’s facing toward you. I would dare say more intimate shot, but you know . . . it’s a bird.

#1 would have been better if the gulls had been looking at me, true, but I love working with selective focus as it can really help to tell a story. I do like #2’s composition and the fact that you can see the whole plastic bag. I had photos of the crows and gulls vying for the bag, but none of them came out good enough to post, so the context is lost in the first shot; hence, the explanation.

Very nice. I’ve always liked seagulls. Where I grew up we had a lot of them and most people found them annoying. I always thought they were pretty cool.

The Birds was one of my favorite Hitchcock movies. It terrified me but at the same time I couldn’t stay away from it. I watched it every time it came on t.v.
