Day 112 – f/1.8

Playing with my 50mm lens again today. I really love the flexibility it provides as far as depth of field, but with opportunity comes challenge. Today I experimented with very shallow depth of field.  It is quite the challenge to find that sweet spot, but oh how I love the effect of falling off focus!  f/1.8 was a bit too tight, so I stopped down a bit to 2.2.  The best results of both are below.

ISO 100, f/1.8, 1/200s, 50mm

f/2.2, ISO 100, 1/30s, 50mm

  1. To be honest… the first shot I don’t really understand or maybe I am not looking right… the second one is adorable… one eye half open as if he (or she?) is looking and wanting to say… ‘hey what are you doing…let me sleep’

    • The first one is focused on her closed eye, but that was the 1.8 and a profile to boot, so it makes it a bit harder to see. I’m going to keep trying with the 1.8 focal length to see if I can catch her face-on.

  2. Like Joanna, I was having a hard time trying to understand the focal point of the first one (I couldn’t figure out how her head was turned for some reason). But when I saw your reply to Joanna about it being a profile, I can see it now. It’s an interesting shot. I really, REALLY like the second shot!

I have a second blog that’s devoted to the cats in a special needs room at a shelter where I volunteer, and I find photographing cats to be particularly challenging (mainly in the setting where I am with them… poor lighting, no good background, etc., but also because it’s hard to capture the wonderful ways they move, etc.). I really admire your photographs of your cat, especially knowing how hard it is!
