Day 252 – Handy Helper

My workplace held a tailgate party today at the University of Nevada’s first home game of the season. This little guy caught sight of me snapping away and stopped just long enough for me to capture his sweet face.

Day 250 – Bill Nye!

We went to see Bill Nye at the University of Nevada tonight. The stage lighting was quite challenging!

Looking at the sundial. And looking . . . and looking. . .  (yes, there is a back-story to this!)

Just one more.

You can find more at my SmugMug Gallery.  There was a science expo outside the Joe Crowley Student Union (“The Joe”) and I’ll be posting those photos as well. I’ve got some up, but it’s late and I need to get to bed.

Day 249 – Portrait Lighting Practice

Maybe I should hire a model?  The shoot I thought I was going to do may not come to fruition, so you are stuck with me again.  I’m working on getting the lighting right: no weird shadows,  getting highlights in hair, and creating shape.

Okay…set up:  Soft box at 45 degree angle to subject (me) at camera right. Light was about 6-feet high and angled down (that’s the light that you see on the top of my head).  Light over my shoulder was my Speedlite at about 1/8 intensity bounced from umbrella.  Pop-up flash at lowest intensity (1/124) used to fire Speedlite, but at that intensity did little add illumination.

In the shot below the Speedlite did not fire, but I still like the lighting in this one.

Day 245 – 56

Just messing around in my make-shift light studio today.  My friend gave me some seamless paper, so I tacked it to the wall and set up my lights.  I needed the practice because it looks like I’ve got another portrait gig coming up and I wanted to be sure I was comfortable with my lights and backdrop.  Besides, I just need to keep practicing and trying new things.

You can find more from my shoot at my new gallery, 56.

Day 238 – Side-light

I would have preferred to use Sweetie for this, but he was busy taking the dog to the vet.  And it’s not as though I can go drag someone in off the street. Once again, my light study involves me.

The Amaz!ng Meeting: Parting Shots

My last post on the subject.

Sara Mayhew, Manga artist. ” A Life of Art and Skepticism”

There were lots of people sporting Amy Davis Roth’s wearable art, Surly-Ramics. (I have three!)

I like this shot from the afternoon taping of The Skeptics Guide to the Universe

Lawrence Krauss, theoretical physicist and author of A Universe from Nothing: Why There Is Something Rather than Nothing

Saturday Night’s keynote presentation was a conversation with Penn & Teller.

After dinner we went to Kelly Carlin’s one-woman show, “A Carlin Home Companion,” a reflective journey of her life as George Carlin’s daughter.

Okay, well, there are lots more at my SmugMug gallery, if you are so inclined.

Day 205 – Puppy Portraits

Today was an incredibly busy day. I didn’t stop from 6am until I got home at about 10pm, so I turned to my critters for inspiration tonight. I set up the Speedlite, grabbed a reflector card and got Nina to “sit” on her blanket.  She did good.

All were shot at 400 ISO, f/5.6, 1/15 sec.  Speedlite behind me to camera left, reflector card (white poster board in the vise) very close to Nina on the right and just out of frame.
